Definition of a CDA “ A CDA, Child Development Associate, is a person who is able to meet the specific needs of children and who, with parents and other adults, works to nurture children’s physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth in a child development framework”
Purpose of the CDA Program The purpose of the program is to enhance the quality of the child care by defining, evaluating, and recognizing the competence of the child care providers and home visitor
CDA Professional Program Candidates…. • Become a knowledgeable and skilled professional teacher of young children through integration of study and experience.
Design of the CDA Professional Program The CDA is designed to be completed in one year, although there are programs that will work to get you done in less time, requiring roughly 480 clock hours of field experience and 120 hours of seminar instruction.

Professional Resource File • A collection of materials that early childhood professionals use in their work with young children and families. Parts: • 1. Autobiography • 2. Statement of Competence (6) • 3. Resource Collection (17 items)
Parent Opinion Questionnaires • The parent of each child in the candidates care completes a confidential questionnaire.
Early Childhood Studies Review A written examination that takes approximately 2 hours and contains 60 questions is designed to measure general knowledge of good practices in early childhood education programs.
Oral Interview • The candidate is given a picture of ten different situations, and a question related to the situation that he/she must answer using their experience and training in the early childhood field.
CDA Professional Program • The early childhood professional who successfully completes the CDA Credential is nationally recognized as highly qualified and skilled. Many child care centers use the CDA to determine wages and promotions in their organization.
CDA Renewal Procedure • A CDA credential is valid for three years and may be renewed for the original setting and age level for five-year periods. There is no charge for renewals.
