  1. THESIS PROPOSAL I-B Cunanan, Taira Dabu, Lisa Dacanay, Dan William Dacayo, Clarissa Paula Dadgardoust, Patricia Daleon, Peter Paolo Adviser: Dr. Gene Regal

  2. Introduction Poor vision and its effect to Academic Performance

  3. Statement of the Problem: Does poor eyesight affect the academic performance of Grade 3 and 4 public school students in Manila age 8-10?

  4. Hypothesis: Ho: Poor eyesight does not affect the academic performance of Grade 3 and 4 public school students in Manila age 8-10. Ha: Poor eyesight affects the academic performance of Grade 3 and 4 public school students in Manila age 8-10.

  5. Objective of the Study: The study aims to investigate if poor eyesight affects the academic performance of Grade 3 and 4 public school students in Manila age 8-10.

  6. Sample Size Calculation and Sampling Design

  7. Sampling Design: Purposive Sampling Sample size : 384

  9. Study Design and Flow Chart Methodology

  10. Methodology • Cross Sectional Study Design • Select schools randomly, one school from each of the most populated barangays in Manila (4) • Select students from the 3rd and 4th grade enrolled in the school year 2011-2012 (informed consent) • Test their vision using Snellen Chart • Less than or equal to 0.7 is visual impairment

  11. Methodology • Obtain student’s academic performance by looking at previous year’s grades • Also, gather data to consider other factors: • IQ level • Class size • Shifting of Classes • Seating assignment • Nutritional status (BMI)

  12. Methodology • Excluded students: • Those who did not give informed consent • Those whose vision is corrected by either glasses or contacts • Those who are blind or colorblind

  13. Cross Sectional Study Design: All elementary school children in 3rd/4th grade Obtain Informed Consent Selection of schools for data gathering and number of students for sample size All elementary school children in 3rd/4th grade in Manila enrolled in school year 2011-2012 Gathering of Data; Testing students vision using Snellen chart and obtaining academic records of previous year W/ visual impairment & good grades from previous year W/ visual impairment & poor grades from previous year W/out visual impairment & good grades from previous year W/out visual impairment & poor grades from previous year Statistical Analysis: Pearson’s Coefficient

  14. Statistical Analysis

  15. Statistical Analysis • Objective: to detect an association between vision and academic performance • Statistical tool to be used in the study is Pearson’s Correlation

  16. Statistical Analysis Independent Sample T-Test: To measure the significant difference on the academic performance of those w/ normal vision and w/ poor vision students. Grouping will be those with normal vision and those with poor vision. In this analysis if we establish a significant difference between the two groupings then we can say that vision can not affect the academic performance of the students.

  20. LETTER TO THE SCHOOL

  21. (Date) (Name of School Administrator) (School) (Address) Dear Sir/Madam, Greetings! We, a group of 1st year medical students from the University of Santo Tomas, would like to request for permission to conduct a study at your institution. The study is entitled “Does poor eyesight affect the academic performance of Grade 3 and 4 public school students in Manila age 8-10?”. We believe that vision problems can and do adversely affect students’ ability to function in and enjoy learning; therefore this study will benefit young children and help improve academic performance. It will be focused on students in the 3rd and 4th grade levels. Our aim is to determine the association of poor visual acuity and their academic performance. The students will be subjected to a visual acuity test then the outcome will be based on the students’ average grades from the previous school year.

  22. Attached to this letter is a copy of our research proposal which will provide allthe necessary information you may need. Parents of the said children will also be informed of this study and will be asked to sign a consent form. We would be happy to address any concerns and questions you may have about the study. You may contact us anytime. Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you regarding this request. Sincerely, Ms. Taira Cunanan Group Leader, Group 27 I-B UST-FMS 09158602824

If I agree to let my child participate in the study, he/she will be subjected to a visual acuity test to be administered by the group. Also I am giving the group permission to gain access to my child’s school records from the previous school year and until the study is completed. The study shall take place in school where my child will feel comfortable and secured. There are no known risks associated with the study.
