  1. Mrs. Howard’s 6th grade class At Hayden Elementary School • Sept. 26, 2000 PRESENTS

  2. Land and Water Biomes Quality Work Exemplar

  3. Intended Learning: Students will learn about and become familiar with the land and water biomes of the earth and their characteristics.

  4. Materials needed: • Nine large pieces of paper, such as bulletin board background paper • Tempra paint or other media with which to paint or color the mural. • Different sizes of paint brushes.

  5. The Learning Experience: Divide the class up into nine groups. Assign a biome to each group.

  6. 3. Have each group research their assigned biome, learning about its plant life, animal life, climate and location on the earth. Mrs. Kendrick, librarian, starts the students on their research.

  7. Students research their biomes in the nature book area. Students work together on their rainforest biome.

  8. 4. Have each group plan, draw and paint a mural of their assigned biome including the plant and animal life present in that biome. Students paint the water on their mural.

  9. One group member checks to see how another group member is progressing.

  10. Students work on different parts of their biome mural.

  11. A student carefully paints an area of her biome poster.

  12. Mrs. Howard’s class spreads out in the cafeteria to work on their murals.

  13. 5.Have each group plan and give an oral presentation to the rest of the class on their assigned biome. Each presentation should include the following information: the biome’s location in the world, the climate, plant and animal life.

  14. Group I explains their biome to the class.

  15. A freshwater biome mural is presented by these group members.

  16. Students explain to the class what they learned about the tundra biome. This group shows off their desert day and night biome to the class.

  17. One student explains where his biome is located while another group member points to the area on the world map.

  18. A student explains the different levels of temperature and sunlight in the ocean environment.

  19. The forest biome group explains their biome in detail to the class.

  20. Visitors watched the 6th graders present their biome murals.

  21. Mrs. Howard talks to the class after the presentations to see if there were any questions.

  22. The Last Step 6. Hang biome murals in the hallway for the school to enjoy.
