Average Speed Chuck Faber, Christopher Adame, Krissy Hopper, and Bridget Gengler
Eight grade standard 1 c. Students know now to solve problems involving time, distance and average speed.
Vocab Review Do-NOW! In your notebook answer these questions….. • How far did you walk from the doorway to your seat? • How long did it take you to walk the distance? • What do you think your average speed was? Distance: measurement of how far apart objects are. Time: measurement of duration How long? Average speed: total distance per unit of time. s=d/t
Class Demo? Pick a volunteer from the class to walk from their desk to the door. Have class makes predictions on how fast he/she will travel (average speed). Measure and time the walk. As a class determine the average speed.
Group work! Have students get into their lab groups (about 4 students). Students work on a computer simulation of a runner on average speed. Each group must complete one worksheet. Review theirs answers as a class.
Formulas Classwork • Pass out time, distance and speed worksheets. • Work in pairs. • Teacher should model how to approach these problems. • What is given? • What do you need? • What is not finished is HW! S= d/t How can you find distance? D=s*t How can you solve for time? T=d/s
Average Speed Lab • Pass out worksheets at end of class explaining lab. • Have each group assign a measurer, timer, roller, and catcher. • Explain each job and their duties. • Have students prep their science notebooks for the lab. • Write title, etc.
Exit Ticket Design two original time, distance or speed problems. Trade your problems with another group. Answer their problems. Label who created and who solved. Turn in
