How Do You View Marriage? • Marriage is a covenant before God. • The Lord said, through the prophet Malachi, that a woman is a man’s wife by covenant (i.e. pledge or promise made to God) (Mal. 2:14).
How Do You View Marriage? • Marriage is a covenant before God. • Sadly, marriage has deteriorated into a man/ woman centered institution.
A marriage that is strong and long-lasting is a marriage that is first and foremost based upon their commitment to God.
“What God Hath Joined Together” - The Permanency of Marriage. • From the beginning, God intended marriage to be permanent. Genesis 2:24 (KJV) Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
Matthew 19:4-6 (KJV) 4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, 5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? 6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
God’s marriage law must be followed for the “joining” to take place (Mat 5:32; 19:4-9; Mark 10:11-12; Rom. 7:2-3; 1 Cor. 7:10-15).
Bound by God’s Law • The man and woman is bound together by God by His law (Rom. 7:2), also described as a covenant. Malachi 2:14b (NASB) … she is your companion and your wife by covenant.
Romans 7:2 (NASB) For the married woman is bound by law to her husbandwhile he is living; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law concerning the husband.
Matthew 19:9 (KJV) And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
“What God Hath Joined Together” - The Permanency of Marriage. • From the beginning, God intended marriage to be permanent. • Therefore, it is our Christian duty to keep our marriage covenant before God!
Why do you keep your marriage together? • For your own personal happiness? • For the sake of the children? • Because your spouse needs you? • Ultimately, the number one reason why we keep our marriages together is because it is our Christian duty to do so.
Christian Duty • Husband and wife are to “cleave” to one another (glue or weld; to join, or stick together) (Mat. 19:5); to bind and commit to one another. Why? • Because “What God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”
Pleasing God is the First Purpose of Marriage. • Make it your number one aimto please God in your marriage! 2 Corinthians 5:9 (NKJV) Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him.
Above our personal happiness, sexual fulfillment, the raising of children, the blessing of companionship, etc. is the goal to please God.

1 John 4:20-21 (NASB) 20 If someone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God should love his brother also.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NASB) 4 Love is patient, love is kind, and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
