The nature of this relationship demands responsibilities 1. From the beginning, one man united with one woman in a relationship described as “one flesh” for life is God’s intent (Gen. 2:23-24; Matt. 19:5-6). 2. Marriage is a “covenant” [agreement, promise, involving our word—Eccl. 5:2-7] & it involves God as witness (Mal. 2:14). 3. Marriage involves many “privileges” & “responsibilities” on the part of both toward each other.
A husband’s privileges involve a wife’s responsibilities. 1. to be “loved” (Tit. 2:4) 2. to have a managed home (I Tim. 5:14) 3. to have a “worked” home (Tit. 2:4-5) 4. to be pleased (I Cor. 7:34) 5. to have physical intimacy (I Cor. 7:1-5) 6. to be respected (Eph. 5:33) A wife’s privileges involve a husband’s responsibilities. 1. to be “loved” with no bitterness (Col. 3:19) 2. to be nourished & cherished (Eph. 5:29) 3. to be provided for (I Tim. 5:8) 4. to be pleased (I Cor. 7:32-33) 5. to have physical intimacy (I Cor. 7:1-5) 6. to be honored (I Pet. 3:7)
Our sense of responsibilities and privileges God’s will intends can be destroyed by… 1. Too close an association with worldly, anti-God friends and couples (Ex. 23:2; I Cor. 15:33). 2. Only remembering what one’s mother or father did in their marriage. You can break a cycle that is bad. A bad example is no example to follow – look for good examples (I Pet. 5:3) & follow the Divine pattern, making your marriage an example to follow. 3. Constant barrage of our liberal, humanistic media and entertainment.
Helps to maintain these privileges & responsibilities 1. Get to know one’s character well before marrying. 2. Determine you will marry one only if he/she believes what the Bible teaches on this subject in particular, and marriage in general. 3. Openly communicate with your spouse. 4. Always behave yourself. You can’t “make” your spouse do what you want him/her to do. 5. Pray together and for each other. If one goes so far as to separate from you, determine you will do what the Bible teaches – seek reconciliation.
