Steps of a Research Paper • Choose an appropriate topic. • Look for GOOD sources. • When you find a good source, make a source card (see previous notes). • Print or make a copy of the source. • Read through and highlight passages that will be useful for your paper. • Make note cards (see previous notes). • Make your APA reference sheet. • Make a working outline for your paper. • Write your rough drafts and conference with others. • Write your finals draft.
Slug Outlines • Once you have completed your note cards (or at least most of them), you want to begin the outlining process. • Read through your note cards and look for ones that contain information dealing with a similar idea. Place similar note cards in a pile. • Once you have your similar note cards in piles, think of a slug for that pile. A slug is a brief heading that indicates the content of each note. These slugs will most likely be the subtopics for your paper.
Working Outline • After making your slugs, you will be ready to start your formal outline. • You may do either a sentence outline or a topic outline. • Remember, although a topic outline may be shorter and less time-consuming, the sentence outline will be more helpful for a research paper. If you do an effective sentence outline, it will make your rough draft much easier. However, the choice is yours.
Your outline is due next Monday at the start of class. It should appear like the outlines you see in your book. • Have the following: 1. A title (Sentence Outline – Global Warming) 2. Your thesis statement 3. An outline of your entire rough draft.
Abstract • An abstract is a 100-120 word summary of the research paper. This summary should be written after the paper is completed. A good way to write it is to summarize each section of the paper in several sentences and then connect the sentences smoothly. • See the APA sample paper for where to place it and how to format it.
Citing Sources in Your Paper • See the handout for my requirements! • In addition, use your book as a source, and look at the APA sample paper for special citation situations. You should be able to find samples for all situations that you may encounter with your paper citations. • If you are confused about something while writing your rough draft, use all of your available resources and do your best. If you still cannot figure out how to do something, email me and ask.
Rough Draft • Your rough draft is due next Monday at the start of class. • Use proper APA format. • Have the following: 1. Title page 2. Abstract 3. Paper (5-7 pages) 4. Reference sheet
