Curriculum Night CTA-Liberty 5th grade 2019-2020
2 Academic Blocks • Block 1-A.M. : 8:10-11:15 (specials during block 1) • Block 2-P.M. : 12:10-2:40 • Language Arts & Math • Ms. Miller & Mrs. Logston • Writing, Science & Social Sciences • Mrs. Hight • Descubres, Writing, Science & Social Sciences • Mrs. Apalategui • Specific subject questions should be addressed with your child’s specific subject area teacher.
Reading (ELA) • Accelerated Reader • Students will take their STAR reading assessment in computer lab each quarter • The STAR assessment helps guide the reading range your child should be reading at • Students must read 30 minutes daily at home from an AR book within their reading range • Parents and students check AR Home Connect to monitor progress with AR. • AR ~ Changes • AR will be directed through Mrs. Tollefson (Librarian)
Reading (ELA) • Literature Studies that may be used (district approved) • Where the Mountain Meets the Moon (Common Core Required) • Frindle • Hatchet • Journeys Textbook/Spalding • Weekly short stories with comprehension/vocabulary tests • Practicing and assessing comprehension tests
Reading/Book Reports • Each quarter 1 book report will be assigned (Total 4) • Grades will be based on: • The book read for the report at students’ current AR level • Genre will be assigned by the teacher for each report • The report type is chosen by the student (No report type can be repeated) • The book reports will be considered long term assignments
Phonograms (ELA) • Phonogram practice will done weekly to promote long-term memorization • Weekly • 15-25 phonograms orally • 20 phonogram quiz weekly • Monthly • We will assess all 70 phonograms
Oral Presentations (ELA) • Quarterly Poetry Recitations • 2 per quarter (Students given recitations at least two weeks in advance.) • DLI students will do theirs in Spanish • Focus on eye contact, volume,, enunciation, posture, pacing, accuracy, and prepared on the due date. Points will be deducted if not prepared or presented on due date. • All major reports have an oral presentation component as well
Writing (ELA class) • How-To and Narratives • Historical Reports • Expository and Persuasive • Compare and Contrast • All year long: narrative, informative, informative-narrative, business letters, friendly letters, journal writing, and persuasive essays will be assigned • Students will be taught and assessed using the “Six Traits of Writing” and “Write from the Beginning” • Thinking Maps
Grammar (ELA Class) Main sources in teaching grammar: • The Writing Road to Reading-Spalding • Easy Grammar • Daily Grams • Other Sources All grammar is reinforced during writing lessons.
Spelling (ELA Class) • Spelling words are taken from the Extended Ayres word list. We are starting in section “T” • Students input 30 words per week. Please check their spelling notebooks each night. • DLI classes input 20 words/week • They also have other vocabulary to learn in Spanish • We test a week behind every Thursday. • Spelling activities will be assigned daily (M-Th). • Spalding Cursive Handwriting is expected in ALL subject areas, including homework.
Math • Glencoe Math (Course 1) & Common Core Concepts focus on 5th grade standards -Mathematical Practices -The Number System -Expressions and Equations -Geometry -Statistics and Probability • Cumulative practice and assessment approx. after 5 lessons • Math Facts: 100 problems (+, -, x, / ) in 2 ½ minutes –assessed monthly (appear in Infinite Campus, but not factored in overall Math grade) • 5th grade standards will be reviewed in class and given as nightly homework • 6th grade standards will be taught daily, with some given as homework • *Work must be shown on ALL problems to receive credit*
Science • The Scientific Method • Science Fair – 2nd & 3rd quarters • Matter • Energy • Forces and Motion • Earth and Space Science • Organisms • Genetics • Human Growth and Development
Social Sciences • Geography • Regions • Presidents • American History (American Revolution 1763-Industrialism 1900s) • 2019-2020 Early People-Industrialism • Informative reports (correspond with writing)

Behavior • Behavior/Homework Chart (Friday section of agendas) • NH = No/incomplete homework • T = Talking • OT = Off task • OB = Other behavior infractions • TU = Tuesday folder not signed/returned • P= Parent signature (missing) Class Economy Plan is used in all 4 classes
Homework • Student’s responsibility to check over their work for accuracy/neatness - Parents check for completion/accuracy/neatness • Work MUST be shown on all math problems on homework, classwork, & tests • Homework will NOT be given ahead of time • Missed homework and assignments can be picked up upon returning • Per CUSD policy, students have one day per each day’s absence to complete and turn in work
Tuesday/Wednesday Binder • Students will have homework on Tuesday relating to the binder. Will be assigned in class on Tuesday/Wed. Return each Wednesday/Thur.
Homework Every Tuesday Night • Name ____________________ Student Grade Report Quarter 1 • A = 90% - 100% B = 80% - 89% C = 70% - 79% D = 60% - 69% F = 59% or below • Set a grade goal that you would like to achieve in each subject. At the mid and end of quarter you will write a reflection based on your set goal. Did you make your goal in each subject? If not why, and what are you going to change to be able to meet it by the end of the quarter? If you did make your goal what are you going to continue to do to maintain your grade?

Robotics Club Applications at the back of the room (please read over thoroughly and return promptly) Students will be required to submit an application with parents’ permission. Parental understanding of the program and involvement in your child’s team is extremely important. Applications are due next Tuesday, Aug. 6th Meetings held on Mondays from 2:45-4:00 in Mrs. Logston’s room, (31)
Health Per the Health Office ~EMERGENCY AND HEALTH UPDATEs must be done on your PARENT PORTAL. This is the only way each school knows who may/may not be in the year book/be on a photo, has health conditions.
