  1. 18 June 2009 RADIO FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION Transponder Product Overview and Advantages

  2. Overview • About Trovan • Requirements for companion animal ID • Why use implantable RFID? • How RFID works • Importance of transponder design/construction for reliability • Importance of needle design • Products for companion animal identification • Who uses Trovan?

  3. About Trovan, Ltd. • Technology leader in the field of RFID since 1989. • 20-year track record of service and reliability. • On-going product R&D program. • Comprehensive technology and patent portfolio. • Broad pallet of products.

  4. Experience • Systems installed in over 60 nations and on seven continents. • Tens of millions of animals identified using Trovan technology. Over 100 million transponders using Trovan technology in industrial applications. • Applications include companion animal ID, livestock ID, fisheries, endangered species. • Customers include major corporations and government agencies in North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Australasia. • Tracking and identifying animals for twenty years.

  5. Trovan Design and Reliability • The TROVAN-patented direct bonding design eliminates the need for a printed circuit board (PCB) and numerous wire bonds. • Reducing the number of potential failure points improves reliability. • Conventionally manufactured devices have 3 to 3 1/2 times the number of failure points of transponders built using TROVAN direct bonding technology.

  6. Trovan Design and Performance • For any given transponder length, TROVAN design eliminating PCB allows longer antenna. • Consequently, TROVAN transponders have a longer read range, all other factors being equal.

  7. The Technology Difference • Patented Direct Bonding: Direct connection with thermal compression bonding

  8. Laser programming vs. Electronic programming • Trovan transponders are available with both laser-programmed as well as electronically programmed ICs. • Laser-programmed ICs by their nature are more reliable.

  9. Very secure identification • Absolutely no duplicate ID numbers. • The assigned transponder number is very secure. Laser etching the number into the chip means the transponder number can never be changed. • Up to 550 billion possible code combinations. • Trovan protocol is patent protected providing legal recourse against unauthorized cloners.

  10. Superior quality • TROVAN transponders are manufactured in ISO 9001-certified facilities and are 100 percent tested by the manufacturer to the most stringent standards of the automotive industry.

  11. TROVAN needle advantages • Trovan-provided needles feature sharper needles and a double bevel for easy insertion. • There is less of a tendency to puncture the skin than with conventional needles.

  12. TROVAN needle advantages (cont.)

  13. TROVAN needle advantages (cont.) • Chart explanation: 2 needles from the competing product and 2 Trovan needles are placed against a polyurethane film which is used to simulate skin penetration. X-axis: path in mm. Y-axis: standard force in Newtons. • Green and red lines show results of competitor’s needles; blue and aqua lines show results of Trovan needles. • 1st peak: point inserted fully. The first peak for the Trovan needle is lower and further back, indicating that less force is required to insert the Trovan needle than to insert the competitor’s needle.

  14. TROVAN needle advantages (cont.) • 2nd peak: end of facet. Again, the Trovan needle requires significantly less foce. • 3rd peak: heel of needle penetrating membrane. Again, the Trovan needle requires significantly less force. • Conclusion: the competing product’s needle generates a substantial amount of friction. Overall, the Trovan needle requires a lower maximum force and then stays at about the same level, while the amount of force required to insert the competitor’s needle is continually increasing.

  15. Broad range of packaging optionsID-100 Implantable Transponder • Pre-sterilized and ready to use. • Individually packaged in a disposable needle. • Use with IM-200 syringe style implanter or IM-300 pistol grip implanter

  16. Broad range of packaging optionsID-100US • Individually packaged, pre-sterilized and ready to use. • Special lancet design features ImplantGaugeTM, allowing real-time visual verification of transponder insertion.

  17. Broad range of packaging options (ID-100US cont.) • Improved implantation procedure retracts lancet as plunger is pushed (reverses conventional design that extrudes transponder) minimizing likelihood of transponder breakage. • Use with IM-100US retractor solution, or IM-300US Pistol Grip Implanter.

  18. Broad range of packaging optionsID-100KB • Pre-sterilized and ready to use. • All-in-one disposable delivery system consisting of lancet and butterfly pusher. • Easy, ergonomic application.

  19. Trovan pocket readers • Dimensions: 125.4mm x 69.8mm x 24mm. • Among the smallest readers available: It is a TRUE pocket reader (ie fits in pocket). • Economical • Ergonomic • Range of comms options available. • Use standard 9V batteries.

  20. Trovan pocket reader size comparison

  21. Trovan pocket readers • LID-560 is economy reader (no comms). • LID-571 offers RS-232 and IRDA comms. • LID-572 offers USB comms. • LID-572BT offers USB and bluetooth (range of up to 30 meters). • Store up to 1,600 readings. • Belt clip is standard. • Optional rubber protective case.

  22. Trovan LID-575 Mid-range Reader • Powered by standard AA batteries; easily replaced by user. • Broad read area and long read range. • USB port and cable for data comms. • Will store up to 6,000 readings. • Optional attractive carrying case.

  23. Trovan readers are tools for professionals • Trovan readers are designed to meet the special needs of veterinary practitioners and breeders. • Trovan readers read all chip protocols found in companion animals: FDX-B, Trovan UNIQUE, Digital Angel/FECAVA, AVID encrypted. • Reliable performance: fast read speed, maximum read range and read area for their size. • Easy, single-button operation. • All LID-57x readers feature boot loaders (meaning that firmware can be updated remotely in the field): no need to return reader to service center for upgrades.

  24. Trovan reader software • All LID-57x readers feature a free PC companion software package which includes: • Reader configuration tools: configure the time and date of the reader from your PC. • Upload and download transponder readings in batches, with time and date stamp. • A “custom names” feature: the user associates a meaningful name to the transponder ID number. When the transponder is scanned, the customer-selected name appears on the reader display. • A software wedge, allowing the user to seamlessly interface with 3rd party applications such as MS Access, MS Excel, Outlook, or any veterinary practice management software. Readings are automatically inserted at the point where the cursor is located. No need to copy and type ID numbers.

  25. Trovan GR-251 High Performance Shelter Reader • Rugged, ergonomic design. • Store up to 3,072 time-and-date stamped readings. • Reader may be hosed down to insure sanitary conditions. • Reader is sealed to prevent moisture from intruding.

  26. Trovan GR-251 High Performance Shelter Reader • Patented triple-coil design maximizes read range and read area. • Digital Angel FECAVA: up to 20 cm • AVID encrypted: up to 15 cm • TROVAN Unique: up to 24 cm • TROVAN FDX-B: up to 23 cm • Operators can quickly locate and read tags, even if not located where expected due to misapplication. • Single-pass scanning enhances operator safety in shelter environments and around dangerous and/or fractious animals.

  27. Who uses Trovan transponders?
