What is RFID? • RFID is radio frequency identification • It is an automatic detection method, that stores and retrieves data • Tags can be used in different products, animals, and people to identify them by radio waves • Similar to barcode technology, but doesn’t need to be scanned • Doesn’t need line of sight like barcodes, it can be read from several feet away
Components • At least two parts: • Antenna • Receives and transmits signal • Circuit • Stores and processes information • Modulating and demodulating an RF signal
Types of RFID • Active • Internal Battery • Can be modified • Greater cost • Passive • Operates without external power source/ obtains power source from reader • Lighter, less expensive, longer life • Shorter read range • Cannot be modified
Video • Uses of RFID tags and risks: • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IC7HEZ-Luy4&feature=related
RFID Uses • Passports • E-passports record personal information as well as travel history • Transportation Payments • Gas Station • Increased productivity during rush hours • Toll Booths • Ski Lifts • Mt. Bachelor uses RFID tags on lift tickets
Big Names in RFID • Wal-Mart • Reduced out of stock inventory by 30% • Increased efficiency • Reduced labor costs • Department of Defense • Forcing suppliers to use RFID tags in shipments to improve supply chain management
RFID Standards • Provides a fully automated data capturing and analysis system that eliminates barcode technology • Read only • WORM: Write Once, Read Many • Read/ Write • Read/ Write with battery power • Read/ Write active transmitter
Potential RFID Uses • Improvements on Inventory Tracking • Animal Tracking • Health Care • Information Verification
Security Issues • Would you take a job if they forced you to get an RFID chip implanted?
Conclusion • What is RFID? • Components • Active Vs. Passive • Uses • RFID Standards • Security Issues
