Biographical Sketch ProjectResearching the Lives of Heroes and Heroines in the War of 1812
Learning Goal: Students will co-create research questions in class, conduct online research of their chosen key figure from the War of 1812, understand their legacy/significance, choose an effective way to display their findings and present their final product at the Grade 7 Potlatch and in class.
Include the following research questions/topics in the biographical sketch project:
Background (i.e. details of their personal life, location and date of birth, occupation prior to the war, where they live, family life, opinions about the colony, etc.)
Surrounding details (i.e. give perspective to the situation, outline the details of the battle they were involved in, explain briefly what had happened in the war so far, etc.)
Role in the War of 1812 (i.e. how key figure got involved, what their ranking was, the requirements of their role or ranking, other leaders they worked closely with, etc.)
Life span (i.e. did they survive the war?, how did they die?, what did they do after the war?, what did their life look like after the war?, etc.)
Legacy left behind (i.e. describe the significance of the key figure in Canadian history, why is he/she a hero?, what does his/her story represent for Canada?, etc.)
Choose how you will present your biographical sketch from the given list of project options
Include many visuals in your biographical sketch! (i.e. pictures, maps, catchy titles, etc.)
Have your biographical sketch project complete and ready to share at the Grade 7 History Potlatch
Communicate your research and project in a 5 minute in-class presentation
Collect all historical information related to the five research questions/topics
Choose a project option and complete the biographical sketch
Part 1: Grade 7 History Potlatch Participation: Dec. 13/2012
All students will be displaying and sharing their Biographical Sketch Projects at the Potlatch.
Part 2: In-Class Presentation: Week of Dec. 17/2012, until they are complete
All students will give a five minute presentation of their Biographical Sketch Project to educate classmates on their key figure from the War of 1812.
