1. External environment – update (ii) Research Excellence Framework Consultation • Consultation follows last year’s Stern review (July 2016) • Principles – consistent with our response to Stern • Purpose • ‘Simpler, lighter touch’ • Minimise game playing • Reduce focus on individuals

External environment – update REF consultation cont./ • Key elements • All research active staff • Break link between institutional performance and individuals • Outputs and impact should be attached to the Institution that hosted the research • Environment and Impact assessed at UoA and institutional level

External environment – update (iii) Office for Students: registration fees Office for Students will be the new regulator for HE • Proposal is for OfS to be funded primarily by registration fees from HE providers to cover operating costs • Do not accept that as a good principle by which the regulator should be funded • Risk-based, proportionate and context-specific approach • Fees should reflect the burdens an HEI places on the regulator

External environment – update (iv) Industrial Strategy Green Paper • Published in January 2017 and running until 17 April 2017 • Outlines ten pillars to improve living standards, increase productivity and rebalance growth across the UK regions • Working group convened • University also engaged with other providers/businesses on a separate regional submission relating to skills and jobs
