  1. Tips to Help Children Develop Healthy Hearing Habits

  2. While parents tend to get their children’s teeth and eyes on a regular basis to ensure good dental health and eyesight, hearing is often overlooked as a health concern. • However, hearing has a significant role to play in the development of your child’s language, learning and speaking skills. • Here are a few things you can do to develop good hearing habits and promote good hearing health in your children.

  3. Choose hearing-friendly toys There are a variety of toys that whistle, play loud music and make sounds. While the noise of most of these toys is harmless, some are simply annoying and can harm your child’s hearing with exceptionally high noise levels. • Beware of toys louder than 85 decibels. • You can check a toy’s ear-friendliness using a sound level metre. • You can also determine sound levels of a toy by holding it 12 inches from your ears. If you flinch, the toy is too loud and unsafe for your child’s hearing.

  4. Lower the volume everywhere Your little one’s ears are exposed to a variety of sounds and noises every day from the TV, radio, computer, music player, traffic, ringing doorbell, ringing phone, screaming siblings and their own sound or music-based toys. • Adjust the volume for all devices at half of their maximum setting. • Get your child used to listening or playing their devices at a low volume even in a noisy environment. • Limit the volume and usage time on your kids’ headphones and music player.

  5. Encourage the use of hearing protectors Protecting your child’s hearing doesn’t necessarily mean to restrict them from attending music concerts, shows and shooting events that promote loud noise and have loud environments. Rather, you can ask your children to wear noise-dampening earphones, earplugs or earmuffs while they are in a significantly noisy environment. • Start young to get your child make this a habit. • You can set examples by using hearing correction device yourself. • Explain them how using hearing protection can help them enjoy the sounds they like while protecting their ears.

  6. The Bottom Line Your child’s hearing health is as important as their dental health and oral hygiene. Start young and create awareness about hearing problems, specifically noise-induced hearing loss while encouraging your child to develop habits that promote hearing health in your children. Furthermore, get your child’ hearing tested early to make sure they get proper care and treatment in case diagnosed with hearing loss. If your child is already hearing impaired and uses hearing aids, make sure you visit your audiologist once in a while to optimise the performance of their earring device. While all the advanced hearing solutions like Siemens Hearing Aids, Starkey SoundLens and Phonak AutoSense OS technology provide the hearing impaired with a hassle-free hearing experience, it is important that you consult your audiologist to find the right solution for your needs.
