MOSQUITO LIFE CYCLES GROUP: 5
Mosquitoes lay their eggs on surfaces of calm/steady fresh waters. Mosquitoes usually lay their eggs at night. After 24 hours the larva emerges.
Mosquito larva are also called wrigglers. They must live in water for 7 to 14 days depending on the water temperature. During growth, the larva molts (sheds its skin) four times. The stages between molts are called instars. At the 4th instar, the larva reaches a length of almost 1/2 inch.
Mosquito pupa are also called tumblers, they must live in water for 1-4 days depending on the species and water temperature. The pupa stays on the surface of the water, it breaths using oxygen through two tubes called “trumpets”. The metamorphosis of pupa to adult mosquito is finished within the pupal case.
Only female mosquitoes bite animals and drink blood. Male mosquitoes do not bite but feed on the nectar of flowers.
