Technology Assistance Students with DMD have a degenerative disease that requires ongoing changes in assistive technology. Here are a few examples: • Motorized brace- enables people suffering from muscular dystrophy to perform simple tasks with their hands, and gain a greater sense of their independence. (Medical News Today) • Voice recognition software- Assists students on the computers. • Robotic Technology- A robotic orthosis could ultimately assist muscular dystrophy patients regain significant use of their limbs. Emotional Toll of Muscular Dystrophy • The agony of watching your child’s physical abilities and health deteriorate. • Children are often well aware of the impact of their disability on their families and may themselves feel a sense of guilt or responsibility for the ensuing emotional or financial strain. • Dealing with the countless questions about “what happened to you?” or “What’s wrong with you?” • It is often difficult for parents to let go of their desire to protect their child from potentially painful situations. • Parents report that their greatest concerns for their school-age children are not the physical barriers they face, but rather the attitude barriers that can result in their child becoming isolated and having low self-esteem.
