Thermal Inkjet based attitude control TIJCube: low cost, COTS Thermal Inkjet Heads as attitude control thrusters for CUBEsat class satellites OBJECTIVE • The project will investigate and demonstrate the feasibility of a micro thruster for attitude control of cubesats based on COTS ink-jet cartridges with and without post acceleration for positional maneuvering including distributed telescopes. DESCRIPTION • There are few options for attitude control of cubesats. This project aims to provide a low cost, low mass, low incremental thrust option ideally suited for cubesat, The work will be in proving the concept analytically and experimentally. EXPECTED PERFORMANCE • Analysis and Ideation 3 months ARO • Experimental evaluation of COTS TIJs 6 months ARO • Evaluation of Improvements in TIJs 12 months ARO COMPARISON TO THE STATE OF THE ART • The only recommended cubesat attitude control component is a reaction wheel rated at 2 ft-lbs. This is too large for a cubesat. The Cubesat community needs a microthruster at the 10s-100s of micro-Newton range. COTS TIJ + post accelerator as in a colliodal thruster or a FEEP can provide the correct level of thrust.
