St. Thomas Aquinas • He studied at University of Naples and in Montecassino • At 17, he became a Dominican of Naples • God gave him the gift of perfect chastity- gave him the title “Angelic Doctor” • Also received nickname of “dumb ox” • Studied under St. Albert the Great • Went on to study at University of Paris • Received his doctorate when he was 31 • Pope Urban IV called him to Rome. St. Thomas Aquinas came and taught but declined a job in the Church • Also declined Pope Clements's offer to make him Archbishop of Naples • During this time, he wrote twenty different writings concluding with Summa Theologica • Unfinished because on the way to the second Council of Lyons he fell sick and died
The Proof of Motion Everything has motion We need a mover to start the motion God was the first mover
The Proof from Necessary vs. Possible Being Nothing can come from nothing Everything on the Earth is possible One necessary creator that will always exist
The Proof from Efficient Cause • Everything has to be made by someone • Example • We need a first maker to start the making • God is the first maker
The Proof from Design • There are natural laws and patterns on Earth • These must have been designed by God • Example-
Effects • St. Thomas Aquinas intertwined Aristotle’s philosophies with the principles of Christianity • For a period after his death Dominicans were divided into Franciscans and Thomists • Thomism ended after Vatican II • He wrote the Summa Theologica which contained the five proofs • Still looked at today as important texts in the Church • Honored as a Saint • His works are part of the necessary study for those who are called to be ordained • Considered one of the Church’s greatest Theologians and Philosophers
