Standards based grading Spokane Public Schools Elementary Fitness & Health
What we report on: • Fundamental Movement, Activity/Sports Skills: locomotor movements, throwing, catching, kicking, striking, ball-handling • Fitness Training/Fitness Testing: Push-Ups, Sit-Ups, ½ Mile/Mile Run, Sit-and-Reach (in addition, during 2nd trimester we do supplementary activities that support training for the Spring post-test in above fitness tests) • Fitness & Health Concepts: Components of Fitness, Cardio, Muscles, Nutrition, Bones
What are our standards based on? • For Fitness Testing: 50th percentile for age and gender from the Presidential Fitness Challenge • For Fitness & Health Concepts: Rubric designed by FH teachers that include grade-level appropriate assessments • For Fundamental Movement, Activity/Sports Skills: Rubrics derived from National Standards as identified in PE Metrics developed by NASPE
What does a report card look like in SPS for Fitness & Health? *This example shows a 1st-3rd grade report card. 4th-6th would also include Fitness & Health Concepts. Kindergarten report cards look different due to some schools having all-day K and some with half-day.
How do FH teachers keep track of progress? • This is evolving as Standards Based Grading has only been in place for a few years, with the first year being a pilot year for some schools. • Fitness & Health teachers have collaborated at inservices and meetings to come up with grade book options/spreadsheets until an electronic system is developed district-wide. • The goal is not to hold a clipboard your entire class, but to record student progress and show opportunities for growth within a comprehensive Fitness & Health program.
Challenges • Planning activities that assess particular skills and concepts while also balancing management/play/social engagement. • Shared classes with other teachers. • Time management- we only see our classes twice a week for ½ hour.
Why use Standards Based Grading? • Consistent content/standards district-wide. • Students understand the system because they are used to it in their classroom settings. • SBG shows progress and allows for students to demonstrate their knowledge and abilities throughout the grading period. • Students understand what the goals are because standards are clearly identified and displayed (ie. I Can statements, standards written on white boards and discussed at the start of class, etc.)
