  2. Deborah Sampson Goes to War • I am going to read aloud a story about a young woman who dressed as a man to fight in the American Revolution. • She fought under the name Robert Shurtleff.

  3. Comprehension • What kind of person do you think Deborah Sampson was, from what you just heard? • Why do you think Dr. Binney kept Deborah’s identity a secret? • What did Dr. Binney probably say in his letter to General Paterson?

She sighs sorrowfully. My Inference: Mulan feels sad and upset. Why does Mulan decide to help her father? Story Clues pgs. 58-61 What I Know Her father is drafted into the army. He is old and frail. War is dangerous, especially to the old, frail people. My Inference: She fears that her father will get hurt or killed.

  24. Making Inferences Students need to use personal experience as well as clues in the story to make inferences (reasonable guesses) about characters, events, or settings. • Reread pages 64 and 65 aloud . • Find details that help you infer how Mulan feels. • Fill in your inference chart.

  25. Multiple Meaning Words • Many words have more than one meaning. When readers come across such a word in a sentence, they have to decide which meaning best fits the sentence. • When you come to a multiple meaning word in a sentence, the other words in the sentence (the context), give clues about the definition.

  28. Syllabication • A syllable is a word part with one vowel sound. • Dividing an unfamiliar word into syllables can help in pronouncing it. Look at the picture for clues. 2. Read the text to find word clues. 3. Use what you already know from your own experience.
