  2. What is a Wetland? • Wetland- a transitional area between land and aquatic habitats • Inland wetlands include wet meadows, bogs, prairie potholes, freshwater marshes, and lagoons • Coastal wetlands include saltwater marshes, brackish marshes, and mangroves

  3. Wetland Ecology • A delicate balance exists between the plant and animal life and the physical structure of the wetland. • Wetland plants provide food and shelter for animals, and they are critical for the water retention system of the wetland. • Plants and animals in the wetland are critical for healthy food webs.

  4. Recreational Commercial The Function of Wetlands

  5. Ecological Habitat Refuge for migrating birds Water purification Natural erosion control Storm butter The Function of Wetlands

  6. Wetlands in Panama • There are 5 protected wetlands by the ANAM (National Authority of the Environment) • There are 3 wetlands considered as wetlands of international importance according to RAMSAR (The Convention on Wetlands)

  7. Punta Patiño • It has an extension of 30,289.7 hectares. • It has around more than 175 different kinds of birds and 40 kinds of mammals

  8. Golfo de Montijo • Its extention is about 89,452 hectares between the marine and terrestrial zone. • It represents an habitat for migratory birds as place of nest building and home. • This area is affected by the presence of polluting substances such as pesticides, herbicides and insecticides, because there are developing farming projects, which causes damage to the ecosystem.

  9. San San-Pond Sak • This area provides an important habitat for aquatic birds and other diverse species of that are in danger of extinction, particularly manatees and sea turtles. • It is called like this because it is between the San San River and the top Pond Sak the Almirante bay.

  10. Damani Guariviara • This area is composed by the indian Ngöbe-Buglé region, in the northeast of the country. The type of forest of the area is perennifolio ombrófilo tropical.

  11. Lagunas de Volcan • It is composed by two lagoons. • These lagoons are located in Volcan, in the Bugaba district, in the province of Chiriqui. • However the lagoons will be a part of the tourist attraction that one tries to support with this new concept of urbanism.

  12. Panama Bay • This area contains 9,300 hectares of magroves, and 2 kilometers of mood • We can find birds of beach such as: Garcetas Grandes, Cormoranes Neotropicales, pink espatula, American stork, Garzas Nívea, Azul Chica and Cocoi, the White Ibis, and also crabs, alligators, which are species in danger.

  13. Wetlands in the United States Florida Coastal Wetlands • Viera Wetlands • Biscayne Bay • Florida Everglades • Wakodahatchee Wetlands

  14. Wetlands in the United States Louisiana Wetlands • Atchafalaya Basin • Bayou LaBranche • Bayou Sauvage • Avery Island • Cocodrile

  15. Loss of Wetlands United States- 53% of all US wetlands lost 1780s-1980s Florida • 46% of Florida wetlands lost • 9.3 million acres of wetlands lost Louisiana • 75 square miles of wetlands lost annually • 46 % of Louisiana wetlands lost • 7.4 million acres lost

  16. Loss of Wetlands Panama • In the 80’s there was an increase. • Chiriqui Gulf: From 1979 to 2004, in the there were a reduction of 21% of the Wetlands. • Montijo gulf: Registered a reduction of 11.5% between the years 2000 and 2006. According to: Burica Press.

  17. Causes of Wetland Loss • Human Population Growth • Agricultural Conversions/ Urban Development • Human Activity • Building of levees, canals, and dams • Over harvesting • Pollution • Natural Causes- major storms, hurricanes, river diversion

  18. Wetland Conservation and Restoration US National Agencies and Legislation • USGS (United States Geological Survey) • EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) • US Army Corp of Engineers • CWPPRA 1990 (Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act) • US Fish and Wildlife Service • State and Local Level Protection

  19. Wetland Conservation and Restoration Panama National Agencies and Legislation • ANAM (National Authority of the Environment) • ARAP (Autority of the Acuatic Sources of Panama) created by the recent law 44 form november 23rd 2006.

  20. Global Initiatives Ramsar Convention on Wetlands An intergovernmental treaty, first adopted in 1971 • Protects more than 1600 wetland areas globally; more than 151 million hectares • 155 Contracting parties Mission Statement: "The Convention's mission is the conservation and wise use of all wetlands through local, regional and national actions and international cooperation, as a contribution towards achieving sustainable development throughout the world" (Ramsar COP8, 2002). Visit: RAMSAR

  21. What is the social awarenessin U.S. & Panama of wetlands?A very small sample

  22. A brief survey was created using surveymonkey.com. The link to the survey was emailed to the class members. 25 respondents

  23. Results 1. Do you think wetlands are important to the environment and should be preserved?

  24. Did you know that many countries including Panama and the U.S. have wetlands and that wetlands are considered to be of international importance?

  25. 3. Are mangroves considered wetlands?

  26. 5. Wetlands help buffer the damage caused by ocean storms and when wetlands are lost flooding is more likely?

  27. 6. That soggy spot of land near your house might be a wetland?

  28. 7. Wetlands have a role in (check all that are true) (% in agreement) • help in controlling soil erosion 79.2% • absorbing/filtering pollutants 79.2% • absorbing excess nutrients 54.2% • help keep the nearby bodies of water clean 62.5%

  29. 8. If a road needs to be built and routing the road directly through the wetlands is the shortest and least expensive way to build the road but part of the wetlands will be disturbed should the road be built?

  30. 9. What if the same road in the above question could be built on an alternate route but the alternate route will cost more money and take longer to travel. The alternate route should be used if it (pick one) • adds only 10% to the cost and 10 % to the drive 4.3% • adds only 20% to the cost and 20 % to the drive 13.0% • adds only 50% to the cost and 50 % to the drive 8.7% • never use the alternate route, save the money 4.3% • use alternate route no matter the cost 69.6%

  31. 10. New wetlands can be created to off set the loss of wetlands?
