Geography Basics Ch. 1 Sec. 1 Mr. Robertson 2010 – Spring Semester
What is Geography? • Study of EVERYTHING on earth!! • Things – rocks and trees • Processes – rainfall • Environment influencing people • People effecting the environment • How world is changing • Official def. – study of physical, biological, and cultural features of Earth’s surface
Spatial Perspective • Geographers try to explain patterns in where things are located and how they are arranged • Landscape – physical, human, and cultural features of a place
Two Branches of Geography Human Geography Physical Geography *Study of distribution and characteristics of the world’s people (where they live and what they do) *Examines how people make and trade things they need to survive *Focuses on earth’s natural environments including landforms, water features, plants, animals, and other physical features *Studies the processes that shape the physical environment *Interaction of people with their environments
How do we use Geography? • Going to school, vacations • Watching television, news • Businesses determining location • Politicians knowledge of district • Building new housing • Disposing of waste
How Do We Study Geography? • Region – area with one or more common features that make it different from surrounding areas • Physical features – climate, rivers, soils, vegetation • Human features – languages, religions, trade networks
3 Types of Regions • Formal region – SAME as region – one or more common features that make it different • Functional region – different places that are linked together and function as a unit. • Ex: transit system connecting many places • Perceptual regions – reflect human feelings and attitudes • “back home,” “Deep South,” “The Lou”
5 Major Themes of Geography • Location – exact or relative spot of something on earth • Place – physical and human features of a location • Region – organizes the Earth into geographic areas with one or more shared characteristics
5 Themes Continued • Movement – how people and things change locations and the effects of these changes 5. Human-environmental – ways people and environments interrelate with and affect each other
Your Turn • Give an example of a formal, functional, and perceptual region 2. Two types of geography that were not mentioned are cartography and meteorology. What are they the study of?
