History • Founded as Third College in 1970 • 1954 Brown VS Board of Education- “separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.” • Lumumba-Zapata College/ Third College/ Thurgood Marshall College name controversy • Lumumba-Zapata College: honor famous twentieth century revolutionaries: Lumumba & Zapata • Third College: 1/3 black, 1/3 white, 1/3 minority students • Thurgood Marshall: death of Justice Marshall • 1993: when TMC became official
