Why do we need a Smart Grid? • Reduce peak to average consumption from the Utility point of view • Reduce the power consumption during peak demand periods • Enable Utilities to get real time information regarding each device/Meter on the Grid • Enable adaptive tariff according to the consumption (TOU)

Home Demand Response: Higher price indication, encourages consumers to reduce demand, thereby reduce the peak demand for electricity.
PLC Communication The Channel: • High attenuation 60dB-90dB • High noise in the grid – white noise and color noise • Impedance modulation – correlated to 50/60Hz, loads in the home. PLC Modem • TDD – Time Division Duplexing • Operate between 9Khz-500Khz • Rates 5Kbps up to 500Kps • Modulation: Spread Spectrum, OFDM, SFSK • PLC Networking Layer – “Mesh”
PLC: A no new wire technology • Using the existing Power Line infrastructure • Simple installation • PLC unit integrated in the unit • No need for additional components ( e.g. antenna ) • Automatic network creation • Cost effective • One chip solution including AFE • Application embedded in the PLC chip • Support - Remote software download ( maintenance) • Performance • More then 90dB dynamic range • Distance – can communicate over 1Km point to point • Designed for Command and Control • High reliability • Low power consumption
Standards Activities • HomePlug CC • ITU G.hnem activity • IEEE P1901.2 activity • PRIME – Ibedrola initiative • G3 – Cooperate with EDF • Others
