WHERE’S THE HONOR? Fear, stress, and confusion can make us forget some things we need to remember.
1 Peter 1:22-25 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; …25 but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.
What had they committed to? • They had purified their souls • By obedience to the truth • For (Gk. eis- toward) a sincere brotherly love Therefore they were to (Gk. agape) love one another earnestly from a pure heart.
Not a new commandment, in word IS a new commandment, in deed 1 John 2:7-10 Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard. 8 At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. 9 Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. 10 Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling.
John 13:35 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. The mark of TRUE disciples
1 John 3:18-21 • 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. • 19 By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; 20 for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. 21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; The assurance of our salvation
What had they left behind? First off… In coming to love, longing for love, showing the mark of it as true disciples… some things needed to be put off, cast away, gotten rid of.
What had they left behind? • Malice • ill will, • C. Hamilton defines as “the opposite of agape love” • A desire to bring down, injure, hurt another
What had they left behind? • Deceit • NASV- guile • Craftiness, subtilty • A hidden agenda
What had they left behind? • Hypocrisy • An actor • Playing the part of another • Unchanging… in sin • Living the lie, not fighting the sin
What had they left behind? • Envy • 9xs in the NT • Unlike jealousy, it is ALWAYS evil • Feelings of displeasure at the good fortune of another
What had they left behind? • Gk. pas/All slander • Every expression of evil speakings • Defamer, traducer • To criminate, accuser • Slander, libel • Backbiter, to speak against another 1 Peter 2:23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.
1 Peter 2:2 2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— 1. To long for the word to seek/crave/desire To desire the 1) pure 2) spiritual milk of the word
1 Peter 2:2 2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— 2. So you can grow
1 Peter 2:4 4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 3. As you come/joined (are attached) to Christ
1 Peter 2:5 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 4. To offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God
So, Where’s the honor? 1 Peter 2:6-7 For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” 7So the honor is for you who believe,
The believer sets his course and moves forward, thru good times and sad, persecution, trial, and rejoicing, without wavering, toward God’s honor.
As a believer, have you set your course? • Have you repented? • Luke 13:3 • Have you confessed your faith? • Romans 10:9-10 • Have you been baptized for the remission of your sins? • Acts 22:16
