Introductory Paragraph What does the Introductory paragraph do? • Introduces the main idea of your essay (Controlling Idea sentence) • Captures the interest of your reader and tells why your topic is important (Lead) Start with a great first sentence • It is the first impression and should spark the interest of your readers. The first sentence leads into two or three sentences that provide details about your subject. All of these sentences build up to your controlling idea.

What is elaboration? Definition – • The addition of extra information or clarifying details • Going the extra mile in your essay • Elaboration takes time and energy because you have to go into greater detail than usual to ensure your reader understands
Types of Elaboration 1. Examples Definition - provides more specific information 2. Quotes Definition - person’s direct words that helps support idea or point being made
Types of Elaboration 3. Statistics/Facts Definition - numbers and information that helps support the idea or point being made 4. Personal Anecdote Definition - a short little story that develops or illustrates an idea or point being made
Types of Elaboration 5. Descriptions Definition - creating a vivid image using sensory details and/or figurative language
Conclusion Paragraph What’s so important about your conclusion? • It’s the last thing your reader will read • Make sure it makes a lasting impression; do not leave your reader confused!
