Mary Wollstonecraft Mary Wollstonecraft was a British writer who supported improvements in the status of women. Her first jobs were teaching in schools and working in childcare. She then worked for the London publisher James Johnson, who published her most famous work, A Vindication of the Rights of Women, in 1792. The book called for equal education for women and men. It also argued that the educational system trained women to be incapable and irrelevant. Wollstonecraft said that equality in education would enable women to be better wives and mothers and to be involved in male-dominated professions. That same year, she left Great Britain for Paris, France, to observe the French Revolution. After returning to London several years later, she joined an influential group, which included Thomas Paine. She married William Godwin, another member of the group, but died shortly after giving birth to their daughter, Mary. A Vindication of the Rights of Women did not bring about any immediate changes in the British educational system.
