What is a MANPADS? • Purpose? • Legitimate military weapon,employed for Point Defence of vital assets and self-protection against air attack • Almost all use Passive Infrared homing guidance • Locks onto heat sources such as aircraft engines • Fire and forget, passive system • Performance? • Range: out to 5 km/3 miles • Altitude: up to 3,500m/11,500 ft Above Ground Level

  7. How to fire a MANPADS • Method of Operation • Select and identify suitable target • Activate Battery Coolant Unit (BCU) • Lock onto target • Pull trigger • Missile launches • Can be achieved in under 10 seconds by an experienced operator
