Connect Ideas • A preposition is a word that connects a noun or pronoun with some other word in a sentence. Example: The colors of our flag are red, white, and blue. (The preposition ofrelates flag to colors.) Slide 2 of 6
Show Relation Between Ideas A preposition may show: • DIRECTION: toward, behind, from, around Example: She ran toward the door. • TIME: before, after, during, while Example: She will come backafter lunch. • POSITION: on, under, over, inside Example: He left them on the desk. • CAUSE: due to, on account of, because of Example: It was due to his carelessness. Prepositional Phrases • The word preposition comes from the Latin pre meaning “before” and posit meaning “to place”. • The preposition is placed before a noun or pronoun which is called the object of the preposition. • The preposition and the object of the preposition together are called a prepositional phrase.
