  1. Traveling To Miami Science Leadership Academy Algebra 1 Bryan Price

  2. Objectives • Your job is to find out how to travel to Miami from Philadelphia using three forms of travel: • Car • Train • Plane • You will use: • Google Maps to search for directions via Car • Southwest for Plane • Amtrak for Rail

  3. Write down the costs of travel • This may include all of the following: • Gas • Motel • Food • Things you need to perform calculations for: • Rate: How fast is each form of travel? How long are the pit stops going to be? • Units: Miles per hour • Distance: How far are you traveling for each form of travel? • Units: Miles • Cost: How effective is the cost versus the rate for different forms of travel? Cost vs. distance? • Units: $ US Dollars Requirements This project will assess your understanding of proportions and ratios. It will get you to understand the relationship between distance and time. You will also be able to see the pros and cons of different forms of travel.

  4. Car Travel • Car Travel • What are the different things you need to take in to account for traveling by car? • What purchases will you need to make? • How does the type of car (make, model) effect your decision to drive? • Calculate the following: • Cost vs. distance • Cost vs. rate • Cost vs. time • Rate vs. distance

  5. Plane Travel • Plane Travel • What does your plane ticket include? What does Southwest provide you with? • Are their any outside costs of flying? • How are you getting to/from the airport? • Calculate the following: • Cost vs. distance • Cost vs. rate • Cost vs. time • Rate vs. distance

  6. Railroad Travel • Railroad Travel • How often does a train run to Miami? • What are the accommodations given by Amtrak? • How are you getting to/from the rail station? • Calculate the following: • Cost vs. distance • Cost vs. rate • Cost vs. time • Rate vs. distance

  7. Presentation – Cite all Sources • Once you have calculated all the material mentioned, you will be asked to create a Power Point or whiteboard that displays all bullets below: • A map of the east coast that displays the travel rout for each form of travel and the rates and distances associated with them • Sample calculations to show you achieved your ratios • To compare between forms of travel, you will list from smallest to biggest the ratios for: • Cost vs. distance • Cost vs. rate • Cost vs. time • Rate vs. distance • Once you have these rates in order, you will write a few sentences explaining which method of travel is: • Fastest • Most cost-efficient (cheapest)

  8. Write-Up • You will hand in a write up along with your presentation that answers an explores the following questions: • If I had to make this trip 2 months from now, would that effect my travel? What factors would hinder or speed up my traveling? • What would happen if my car had better or worse gas mileage? • How does the price of gas effect my decision to go by car? • How does cost effect your decision to travel by a particular form of transportation? • What makes travel by Train beneficial? By Car? By Plane? • Is there anything that surprised you about the different forms of travel? • What did you learn most by doing this project? • This write up should be a minimum of two pages. • You should use proportions to justify all of your answers. • Answers that do not include or reference a ratio will not receive full credit.

  9. What resources do I use? • Southwest – http://www.southwest.com/ • You will most likely have to fly into Ft. Lauderdale • Amtrak - http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/HomePage • Google Maps - http://maps.google.com/
