Overview • SMUD • Policy Drivers • RPS Activities • Renewable Generation
SMUD • Publicly Owned (Sixth Largest in U.S.) • Service area of 900 square miles, serving 1.4 Million (Sacramento County and parts of Placer) • Over600,000 Residential, Commercial and Industrial customers • Record peak demand-3,299 MW on July 24, 2006
Policy Drivers • SMUD’s Board of Directors adopted aggressive Sustainability Goals: • Aggressive 23.9% Renewable supply (20% RPS/3.9% Greenergy) by 2010; 37% (33% RPS/4% Greenergy) by 2020 • GHG Reductions by 2050 (10% of 1990 levels, <350,000 metric tonnes/year) • California Solar Initiative – CA goal is 3000 MW, SMUD target is 125 MW • Feed-In Tariff
Greenergy • $3 (50% option) or $6 (100% option) a month • SMUD meets half or all of customer electricity needs with power made from renewable resources • SMUD matches 40 % of Greenergy contributions to develop new, local renewable energy sources • Since 1997, over 50,000 customers have joined
RPS Activities • SMUD Guidebook • CEC Certification • WREGIS • Request for Offers and Unsolicited Proposals • SMUD Renewable Generation
SMUD Guidebook & Certification • Essentially mimics the CEC Guidebook • Two Exceptions • PV installations where SMUD owns the RECs • Baseline Date • Certification of SMUD facilities as RPS Eligible via CEC Certification process
Western Renewable Energy Generation Information System (WREGIS) • A renewable energy registry and tracking system for the Western Interconnection • Online June 25, 2007 • Housed at the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) • Developed by CEC and the Western Governors' Association (WGA) • Ensure the credibility of the "green" value of renewable electricity, avoid double counting
