Objective In this session we will take a closer look at Information literacy and see how we use an online tutorial for IL in user education at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and at St.Olavs Hospital – Trondheim University Hospital

VIKO - Your Guide to Information Literacy • Interactive course in information literacy • Designed for students at NTNU • Provides help in searching for information and writing papers • Can be implemented as part of other library and university courses VIKO ver.2 (2007) • Subject guides • WAI-recommendations
VIKO aims to • Enhance information literacy at NTNU and St.Olav’s Hospital • Increase quality of students’ performance • Replace basic-level user education • Teach students essay writing and source evaluation techniques • Support teachers in student tutoring • Prevent plagiarism
Strategies for implementation • Implement VIKO in user education at the NTNU Library • Introduce VIKO for health care professionals at St.Olavs Hospital • Integrate VIKO into NTNU’s e-learning platform
Integration of VIKO in user education at the NTNU Library • Promotional material distributed to all branch libraries • Demonstration of VIKO to all reference and subject librarians • Survey to incorporate systematic use of VIKO in NTNU Library’s courses and classes
VIKO for the healthcare professionals at St.Olavs Hospital • Training based on EBP with systematic use of VIKO during the course • Regular library training classes • Courses at hospital departments • Self-tuition • Promotion of VIKO at introductory courses
Integration with it’s:learning – NTNU’s e-learning platform VIKO is • linked from it’s learning’s homepage • promoted as help in writing papers and literature searches • recommended in it’s learning classes for teachers • teachers are offered help to link VIKO from courses • using it’s learning test tool
VIKO Subject guides – learning outcome • Be familiar with the bibliographical sources within the subject • Be able to identify, analyse and critically evaluate information resources • Know where to find information sources • Know how to use them
VIKO Subject guides • Pilot project 2007 • 3 subject guides (Biology, Scandinavian Studies, Health Education) • Usability test • May 2008: • 25 VIKO subject guides operative (in norwegian) • Search examples for 30 databases

Librarians have to be information literate themselves, with a high degree of professional competence; this will make them confident in their abilities to teach, assist and advise others
