  2. What is a podcast • A digital audio or video file that is downloaded and played on a media player or computer. • An RSS feed that can be sent to subscribers.

  3. Podcasts • A combination of terms : iPod and broadcast • Can be downloaded from iTunes or directly from an organizations website. • Can be created by anyone with a microphone, digital camera, and a computer. • Distributed as episodes

  4. How can you make a Podcast • Plan • Topic • Format • Location • Produce • Equipment • Software • Publish • Register a Web Address • Find/Buy Web Hosting • Start a Blog • Create an RSS Feed • Promote • How to get listeners

The ASSURE model • Smaldino, Lowther, & Russell (2012) define the ASSURE model as a process of steps designed to help educators effectively implement technology and media into their instruction. • The steps are labeled as: • A – Analyze Learners • S- State Standards and Objectives • S– Select Strategies, Technology, Media, and Materials • U- Utilize Technology, Media, and Materials • R- Require Learner Participation • E- Evaluate and Revise

  6. Natural Disasters Using the ASSURE model to teach 8th grade students while implementing the use of podcasts.

  7. A- Analyze Learners • Surveys/Pre-Tests • Many students responded that they were comfortable with learning new technology. • Students displayed a broad interest in various Natural Disasters.

  8. S- State Standards and Objectives • Students will be able to present information about a Natural Disaster that will inform other students. • Students will create a podcast detailing safety information about their particular disaster. • Technology
Standard 1: Knows the characteristics and uses of computer hardware and operating systems
Standard 3: Understands the relationships among science, technology, society, and the individual
Standard 6: Understands the nature and uses of different forms of technology • Science ESS2.D: Weather and Climate

  9. S- Select Strategies, Technology, Media, and Materials • Create a bridge between students and the standards • Strategies, Materials, and Methods • Computers • Internet Access • Projector • Presentation software (PowerPoint or Keynote) • Student groups 2-3 (3 max) • Poster Board • Art Supplies

  10. U- Utilize Technology, Media, and Materials • Present materials to the students and explain their individual use • Determine the use for all the materials listed earlier

  11. R- Require Learner Participation • Introduction to the Listen (Teacher) • Group Members • Choose individual roles and responsibilities • Research natural disaster chosen • Become familiar with the equipment, and teach to partners • Create the final products • Podcast • Poster Board

  12. Evaluate and Revise • Post-Test on Natural Disaster • Survey on feelings throughout the project

  13. Why use Podcasting in Education? • Pre Lab Demonstrations/Directions • Students absences • Facilitate self-paced learning • ELL students • Ease of communication • Retention
