There is a decided tendency to meet diverse student needs through diverse educational options or ”pathways”. • Accelerating change - Global, knowledge-based and innovation-based societies are quickly rendering obsolete what has been previously learned. • Focus on preparation for future jobs (progressively rewarding individual creativity). • Quality of learning can be enhanced by individualized (student-relevant) education and technology. • Decentralization- Technology has eliminated social, economic, geographical and physical boundaries. • Longer life-spans require more opportunities for life-long learning. • Students with diverse personal circumstances require flexible access to learning opportunities, schedules and venues, e.g., home, workplace, community learning center, as well as traditional campus-based institutions.
