Before: Drawing of Pill Bug This picture was drawn from memory. I thought a pill bug was an insect with six legs, however after looking at the bug under a microscope and after researching it, I discovered that the pill bug was not as I had recalled.
After: Drawing of Bottom Half of Pill Bug After viewing a pill bug through a microscope I paid closer attention to detail. Although this is only the underside of the bug, the part that is shown shows the legs’ curves and the underside lines.

Using a microscope allows students to get a closer view of a bug. When using the microscope students are more likely to understand what the bug’s body looks like. They will also be able to see the difference between the bug’s head, thorax, and abdomen. • ESEM on Bugscope allows students to see a live bug chat and images of bugs so that they are more involved in the learning process.
Other Connections to Bugscope • In general, the bugscope project could be connected to learning the etymology of bugs. First students could study the bugs’ details and then they could view a live bug chat and images to gain a greater understanding. • Secondly, the students could be put in charge of taking care of different kinds of bugs. After learning what they eat, what sort of climate they should live in and other particulars about the bug. They would feed them and observe their growth and behaviors.
