Hex Bolts Bolts with a hexagonal head and threads for use with a nut or a tapped hole.
Carriage Bolts Bolts with smooth round head and a small square section underneath. Typically used where there is a desire to restrict access to bolt removal. E.g. Fence Hinges or Vehicle Bumpers.
Lag Bolts and Hanger Stud Bolts with a pointed tip. Used to fasten things to wood. Has a high shank strength and aggressive thread pattern. Upper Left: Hanger Stud
Eye Bolts Bolts with a circular ring on the head end. Used to attach rope or chain.
C.A.R.T. Engineering Lab Eye Lag Bolts Similar to eye bolt but with wood threads instead of machine threads. This type of bolt has a pointed tip.
U-Bolts Bolts in a U shape for attaching pipe or other round surfaces. Can be round or square. Is secured by 2 bolts. Typical use is to attach car springs to an axle.
Cap Screw Family Button Head Cap Screw (BHCS) : Sits on top of surface and needs an Allen Wrench to tighten it. Wrench is typically a bit undersized for the shank size. Flush Head Cap Screw (FHCS): Sits into a cone shaped hole and the head sits flush with the surface. Socket Head Cap Screw (SHCS): Can sit on either the surface or into a square shouldered hole.
TorxMuch like the Allen sets is the drive pattern. Used throughout the automotive industry.
Flat Washers Flat washers provide increased bearing surface for bolt heads and nuts and distribute the load over a larger area.
Lock Washers Lock washersprevent a bolt or nut from becoming loose under vibration
Fender Washers Fender washers are oversized flat washers used to distribute the load over a wider area. They are used in soft materials.
Ogee Washers Thick, large diameter cast iron washers with a sculptured appearance. Used in wood construction.
Internal Tooth Lock Washers A washer with internal teeth. Used to prevent nuts and bolts from backing out.
External Tooth Lock Washers A washer with external teeth. Used to prevent nuts and bolts from backing out.
Square Washer A 4 sided washer.
Finishing Washers Used to obtain a finished look. Usually used with oval head screws.
Nylon Insert Lock Nut A.K.A. “Nylock” Nylon insert lock nutseliminate the need for washers.
Wing Nut Wing nuts have two thin flat wings and are used where a nut has to be turned with the thumb and forefinger
Standoff Nut A.K.A. “Coupling Nuts” Standoffsare used to provide clearance between parts.
Hex Nut A six sided nut.
Kep Nut A.K.A. “K-Locks or Keps” Kep nutshave an attached free-spinning external tooth lock washer. They provide greater holding power and reduce assembly time.
Weld Nut Weld nuts are a specialty type of nut used to attach parts to a frame.
Acorn Nut A.K.A. “Cap Nut” A nut with a domed top over the end of the fastener. They are used for appearance and/or to cover thread ends.
Square Nut A four sided nut.
Tee Nut and Hanger Stud rockler.com A tee nut is designed to be driven into wood, composite, or particle board to create a threaded hole.
Flange Nut A flange nut has a built in washer-like flange.
