Agenda • Me • The last year • EM (TEM and ESEM): OSU and UO • ESH • Current and future plans • CytoViva HSI: OSU • EM (SEM, ESEM): OSU and UO, Cryo: UO • ESH
Me • Academia • Corporate • Life / Location
The last year • Philips CM-12 • TEM sample prep http://camcor.uoregon.edu/
The last year TEM Oregon State University Electron Microscope Facility Philips CM-12 120keV scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) for conventional transmission electron microscopy research work. Pros: When properly maintained, can have less than 1 nm resolution. Cons: Designed in 1960's, difficult to maintain and use. No Back Scatter, EDX, or digital processing. Currently not working. http://www.science.oregonstate.edu/bpp/EMfacility/
The last year FESEM Oregon State University Electron Microscope Facility FEI Dual Beam field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM, pictured above right), and a FEI environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM, pictured below right). Pros: ESEM requires little sample prep. FESEM can have 1.5 nm resolution depending on the sample. Cons: Less resolution than TEM. OSU Lab / Operator is part-time and learning the new equipment. ESEM http://www.science.oregonstate.edu/bpp/EMfacility/
The last year Nanoparticles -- Occupational Health and Safety (OSH) aspects • No OHS regulations in the world • Chemical laws: TSCA and REACH • Hazards, Exposure Pathways, and Controls • 806 products, 484 companies, 24 countries • S. 3274, H.R. 5940
Current and future plans Oregon State University CytoViva Hyperspectral Imaging System (HIS) X, Y, Z stage Resolution down to 20nm. Spectral analysis can go lower. 24 hpf zebrafish are transparent.
Current and future plans The CytoViva Hyperspectral Imaging System (HSI) provides spectral analysis of materials and biologicals imaged with the CytoViva Nano-scale Optical Microscope. Operating in the visible near infrared spectral range (VNIR), CytoViva HSI supports research in areas such as nano-drug delivery and nano-toxicology. This spectral analysis method supports both non-fluorescent and fluorescently labeled components in live cells and nano-materials. Work with AFRL
Current and future plans • SEM and/or ESEM with Backscatter Diffraction • SEM and/or ESEM with EDX (SEM-EDX) • Cryo in 2010 http://camcor.uoregon.edu/
