Succession 2 L.O: to review succession to apply knowledge to past exam questions to research how succession is deflected Starter:
Spot the Mistakes! Circle each word and write the correct word in the margin Primary succession is where dominant species colonise an area. They are highly adapted to the hostile biotic factors and when they decompose, they add nutrients and start to form basic soil. This makes the area more hostile and allows other species to start colonising the area. These organisms then out-compete the other organisms present and become the pioneer species. Succession continues to the final serena, which is called the climax population. This has a very low index of diversity and many niches, resulting in the highest ecological stability of all stages.
Types of Succession Primary (where there was NO soil) Secondary (where SOME soil remains after a disturbance, e.g. after a fire)
