English Lesson Ms. ErynMuenchau
Objectives • For 10th grade English students • Students will learn to use words they already know to help define words they don’t. • Use words surrounding word in sentence to grasp meaning. • Be able to identify when words are being used incorrectly.
Using Words You Already Know “…You’re not so radical, in fact, you’re fanatical.”- The Flaming Lips Fan- or Fanatic- Pictures from google
Definition of Fanatical • Devoted to a person, group, team, etc • Usually think of cheering fans • Marked by excessive enthusiasm and often intense, uncritical devotion (Merriam- Webster dictionary)
Using Contextual Evidence “… Antinous there, the prime mover in these misdeeds, inspired not so much by wish or need to marry as by very different aim, in which the powers above have thwarted him. And that was to make himself king of the fair city and land of Ithaca…” -The Odyssey by Homer Picture from google
Using Contextual Evidence • Substitute a possible meaning in place of unknown word. “in which the powers above have him” • Does sentence still make sense?
Definition of Thwarted • Foil, baffle (Websters). Does this work though? • Block, defeat (Websters). This definition is more appropriate.
Example DECOMPOSE: • Build up, make • To let go of • To break down by decay • To end control of
Example The girl was confounded with joy when she went to pick up her brother from the airport. • What’s wrong with this sentence? • Which word is out of place? • How can we fix it?
