  1. HW 3.4: Pg. 146 #42-47all TEST MONDAY! September 19, 2012More multi-step equations and consecutive integer problems Warm-up: Do one group’s multi-step review sheet. When you are done, compare answers with your group. Then you will go to a person from that group to check your answers.

  2. -18 -18 5 5 Lesson 2.4Simplifying before Solving Equations Steps to solve equations • Simplify - Take care of Negatives and Absolute Values - Distribute -Combine Like Terms • Add or Subtract • Multiply or Divide Ex 1. 3(x + 6) + 2x = 10 3x + 18 + 2x = 10 Distribute 5x + 18 = 10 Combine Like Terms 5x = -8 x =

  3. Steps to solve equations • Simplify • - Take care of Negatives and Absolute Values • - Distribute • -Combine Like Terms • Add or Subtract • Multiply or Divide • 3x + 5x + 15 = 10 2. 4(2b + 1) = 8 • -3(2m – 5) = 39 4. 6x – 2(5x – 3) = 20

  4. What are consecutive integers? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 43, 44, 45, 46, 47 Consecutive integers are integers that follow one another. What would the next 3 consecutives integers be after 9? What would the next 3 consecutive integers be after -9?

  5. So, what would the next 3 consecutive integers be after n? Check if this works out: Plug in n = 3 Does this work for negative integer? n = -3 Does this work for any integer? n, 1st# n + 1, 2nd# n + 2, 3rd#

  6. How do you write consecutive odd or even integers? What are ODD integers? 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, … What are EVEN integers? 2, 4, 6, 8, 10… What are adding to each integer to get to the next? adding 2 (+2)

  7. Setting up Consecutive Integer Problems Consecutive Integers: Consecutive Odd Integers: Consecutive Even Integers: Example 2: Find three consecutive even integers whose sum is -42. Then check your answer.

  8. Practice: Find three consecutive integers whose sum is -159.
