SWE’s Strategies • Professional Development: SWE will provide opportunities for women to attain, enhance, and demonstrate leadership, professional, and technical excellence that results in career achievement, advancement, and satisfaction. • Diversity and Inclusion: SWE will embrace and promote the value and power of diversity in specialties, age, race, ethnicity, language, gender identity, sexual orientation, and interests. • Knowledge and Information: SWE will share its acquired knowledge and promote programs that bridge the gaps in recruitment, professional development, and retention of women in engineering. • Outreach (Career Guidance): SWE will inspire girls and women from all diverse backgrounds and life stages to consider engineering as a meaningful and rewarding career.
Professional Development: FY08 Focus • Professional Development Programs • Continue enhancing the professional development program toward establishing SWE as the premier professional development provider for women engineers • Certification program • Wide breadth of topics addressing all career stages • Variety of delivery vehicles • Provide opportunities for members to connect with other professionals who have experience in their areas of focus • Awards and Recognition • Externally recognize and publicize the achievements and successes of women engineers who lead the profession through their contributions to industry, education and the community
Diversity and Inclusion: FY08 Focus • Implement updated Diversity and Inclusion strategy per plan and institutionalize process • Create a new forum which addresses why and how corporate executives should advance an environment of inclusion • Identify and provide leadership training for diverse SWE members with “high potential” for assuming national and regional leadership positions
Knowledge and Information: FY08 Focus • Position SWE as the premiere provider of training for women in engineering • Position SWE as the primary resource to policy makers on STEM education • Communicate to employers the enhancements that SWE members gain in professional capabilities through membership in SWE • Publish information on what women engineers look for in potential employers
Outreach: FY08 Focus • Launch K-12 center • Increase SWE participation in elementary school programs • Form partnerships with educator associations • Enhance our relationship with informal educators in groups, such as Girls Inc. • Increase the awareness of the need for higher-level math and science courses at the pre-college level
FY08 Goals and Objectives: Professional Development • Goal 1: Increase opportunities for all SWE members to gain leadership skills and experience in a supportive environment through SWE training programs and in volunteer capacities. • FY08 Objective: Continue enhancing the professional development program toward establishing SWE as the premier professional development provider for women engineers. • Goal 2: Showcase SWE members and women engineers who excel in technical expertise, leadership or SWE service by providing avenues that share their expertise and publicize their achievements. • FY08 Objective: Externally recognize and publicize the achievements and successes of women engineers who lead the profession through their contributions to industry, education and the community. • Goal 3: Develop mechanisms that enable SWE members to increase their technological knowledge and capabilities. • FY08 Objective: Provide opportunities for members to connect with other professionals who have experience in their areas of focus.

FY08 Goals and Objectives: Knowledge and Information • Goal 1: Become recognized among employers of SWE members as a premiere provider of training for women in engineering. • FY08 Objective: Communicate SWE training capabilities and success to key audience through an informed promotional process. • Goal 2: Communicate to employers the enhancements SWE members gain in professional capabilities through membership in the Society. • FY08 Objective: Share the experiences and knowledge that participants acquire in their SWE roles with their companies because they lead to increased contributions. • FY08 Objective: Encourage participants to relate their SWE experiences and knowledge gained with their employers and to link SWE to their contributions whenever suitable. • Goal 3: Champion actions that enhance the hiring and retention of women engineers with employers. • FY08 Objective: Create, publish, and update information that outlines what women engineers look for in potential employers.
FY08 Goals and Objectives: Outreach • Goal 1: Introduce more girls and women to career opportunities in engineering and technical fields. • FY08 Objective: Increase SWE participation in elementary school programs. • FY08 Objective: Share successful SWE member outreach programs through communications and forums. • Goal 2: Provide guidance and support to teachers and counselors to expand the involvement of girls and women in math, science, and engineering curricula offered at academic institutions. • FY08 Objective: Form partnerships with educator associations. • FY08 Objective: Increase the awareness of the need for higher-level math and science courses at the pre-college level.
