  2. Module 13 - Computer Control: The Human Machine Interface Exploring available HMI systems to control ROVs By Jeremy R. Hertzberg David Cummins & Carey Williamson

  3. Basic types • Keyboard • Mouse • Joystick • 3D Mouse • MFD • Pedals • Xbox 360 style controllers • Force feedback

  4. Keyboards • Benefits include • Common layout • Cost • Down sides include • Large amounts of keys, makes it harder to develop e a action memory. • Lack of dedicated keys (can be repainted)

  5. Keyboards-hacked or interface • It is possible, to remove the keys and solder a dedicated switch in place of the key. • Good for trigging a event. • Another option is a device that looks to the computer like a keyboard, but breaks out the connections so you can use your own switches. • GP-Wiz40-Eco USB Controls Interface • http://groovygamegear.com/

  6. Mouse

  7. Joystick • Provide a direct connection from physical 3D space to computer land. http://www.elwia.se/en/products.joysticks-controller.157.asp

  9. Joystick • Older joysticks often use potentiometers. • Potentiometers work by physically making contact with a resistive surface. • They are subject to dirt and corrosion.

  10. Joystick • Newer high-end joysticks use noncontact sensors to measure positioning of axis. • Generally optical encoders • Or Hall effect sensors (Magnetic) http://www.duke.edu/web/isis/gessler/topics/encoders.htm http://www.pc-control.co.uk/incremental_encoders.htm http://www.pc-control.co.uk/incremental_encoders.htm

  11. Joystick • Preferred method of professionals • Windows interface • Do Calibrate (Control panel->Game controllers) • Axis • X,Y,Z, Xrot,Yrot, Zrot • Tophat

  12. 3D Mouse • http://youtu.be/8lcBYY9hTyQ

  13. Multi Function Displays (MFD) • This technology was pioneered for combat aviation. • It combines hard switches with a display panel to provide context sensitive displays and user input. • It can now even be found in passenger cars. http://frontierindia.net/indigenous-mfds-for-indian-air-force-su-30-mkis

  15. Special • Pedals

  16. Xbox 360 • Short throw • With its small movement it is generally unsuitable to ROV operations. • Switch • Some units don’t even produce a continuous variable • They have buttons under the joystick sticks. Technically these are equivalent to Tophats.

  17. FORCE FEED BACK • Yoda
