  1. Including Atmospheric Aerosols  in the pCRTM NOAA/NASA Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation April 2005 Clark Weaver Atmospheric Chemistry and Dynamics Branch NASA / GSFC GEST/ University Maryland Baltimore County Collaborators: Paul Ginoux Peter Colarco Alrindo da Silva Joanna Joiner Paul van Delst

  2. Goal: • Account for effect of Absorption and Scattering of Atmospheric Aerosols (Dust) in pCRTM • Determine impact on: 1) pCRTM calculated Brightness Temperatures 2) retrieved Atmospheric temperatures and water vapour amounts • Use pCRTM (with Aerosol Modules) in Forecast Impact on Observed minus First guess Satellite Brightness Temperatures ??

  3. First Guess Radiances TOVS Tocean Tocean Ocean Ocean Tdust FG FG Observed Tb = f ( Tocean,Tdust ) First Guess Tb = f (Tocean) Usually Tdust < Tocean O- F Tb < 0

  4. First Guess Radiances TOVS Tocean Tocean Ocean Ocean FG Tdust Tdust Tdust 3D Model Dust Fields FG FG FG Observed Tb = f ( Tocean, Tdust ) First Guess Tb = f (Tocean, Tdust ) Accounting for dust absorption and scattering in TOVS retrieval system

  5. Forecasted 3D Dust fields Temperature, Moisture from GMAO FvGCM (offline transport model run with assimilated meteorology) Aerosol Coefficients Absorption Scattering (single) pCRTM Brightness Temperatures

  6. Two Options for Forecasted 3D Dust fields Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) Finite volume General Circulation Model (FvGCM) Winds and Temperatures are assimilated and used to drive offline Aerosol transport model Dust Size distribution information (5 bins) Not yet in production mode Almost Real-time Navy Aerosol and Analysis Prediction System (NAAPS) Forecast Winds and Temperatures used to drive offline Aerosol transport model No Dust Size distribution information Production mode 120 hr forecasts

  14. Completed Developed code to generate Aerosol Extinction and Scattering Coefficients for HIRS and AMSU satellites Developed version of pCRTM that accounts for Aerosol radiative effects. Current Testing out two options for 3D model dust fields. Investigate if dust size distribution information is needed.
