Including Atmospheric Aerosols in the pCRTM NOAA/NASA Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation April 2005 Clark Weaver Atmospheric Chemistry and Dynamics Branch NASA / GSFC GEST/ University Maryland Baltimore County Collaborators: Paul Ginoux Peter Colarco Alrindo da Silva Joanna Joiner Paul van Delst
Goal: • Account for effect of Absorption and Scattering of Atmospheric Aerosols (Dust) in pCRTM • Determine impact on: 1) pCRTM calculated Brightness Temperatures 2) retrieved Atmospheric temperatures and water vapour amounts • Use pCRTM (with Aerosol Modules) in Forecast Impact on Observed minus First guess Satellite Brightness Temperatures ??
First Guess Radiances TOVS Tocean Tocean Ocean Ocean Tdust FG FG Observed Tb = f ( Tocean,Tdust ) First Guess Tb = f (Tocean) Usually Tdust < Tocean O- F Tb < 0
First Guess Radiances TOVS Tocean Tocean Ocean Ocean FG Tdust Tdust Tdust 3D Model Dust Fields FG FG FG Observed Tb = f ( Tocean, Tdust ) First Guess Tb = f (Tocean, Tdust ) Accounting for dust absorption and scattering in TOVS retrieval system

Completed Developed code to generate Aerosol Extinction and Scattering Coefficients for HIRS and AMSU satellites Developed version of pCRTM that accounts for Aerosol radiative effects. Current Testing out two options for 3D model dust fields. Investigate if dust size distribution information is needed.
