Shifter Requirements • Safety Training • Hall Safety • given by GLIMOS (Andy Nichols) • covers operations in MICE Hall • ISIS introductory safety course • Half hour with online test – see Rose Hayes to arrange • On can be done online at http://www.isis.stfc.ac.uk/user-office/safety/ • RAL site safety course • Mondays at 9:30 – see Rose Hayes to set this up • Equipment • Personnel protective equipment (PPE): ie. Hardhats, hi-vis vests and safety boots (not required during operational periods) • Safety boots are your responsibility – must be 100% non-metallic • Radiation badge from ISIS Health Office • In Hall – you must wear hardhats, vests and rad badge. Hard boots/shoes are preferred but not required during running.
Operations Roles in MICE • DC – Duty Co-ordinator - In charge of all activities in and around the Hall • MOM – Operations Manager • Responsible for day-to-day running of data-taking • Ensures proper authorizations in place and manages run plan • BLOC – On Call BeamLine Expert • Responsible for turning ON and setting up Target, Decay Solenoid, beam line magnets and Beam Stop • Lead Shifter • Experienced shifter – understands all aspects of running a data-taking shift • Is responsible for MLCR and MICE personnel during operation of experiment when MOM or BLOC not present • Has completed PPS training and at least 3 shifts • In control of the paper log and the elog • Shifter • First role during data-taking • SOC – Software On Call Expert
Operations Roles in MICE • The names of all those in on-call positions will be posted on the wall of the MLCR. The MOM/Ops Coordinator will see that they are kept up-to-date.
Shifter Responsibilities • You are responsible for ensuring • High data quality to fulfill MICE analysis goals • Responsible and correct operating of MICE equipment • Safe conduct of and for yourself, those in the MCR and in the Hall during Operational phases
General Shifter Rules • Wear protective gear in Hall • No lone working • 2 people (ex. Magnets, Search, CE) • 3 people required to enter Hall under CE • Pay attention to the experiment and alarms • shifter work is the primary responsibility • ie. no writing software, no writing talks
Shifter Logistics • You will most likely need to spend the night at RAL. • email miceadmin@stfc.ac.uk for a room at Ridgeway during your shift period • During the User Run we close the Hall to work. • Your shift slot should be shown on CHEESE. Turn up to your shift at least 10 minutes early to familiarise yourself with the current run status • If you think you might need food, bring it with you – logistics may prevent access to RAL cafeteria • Two people should be in the MLCR at all times (within reason)
What you will be operating: • MICE PPS (personnel protection system) • Controlled Access procedure • Emergency procedures • Target • Stop/start dipping • Change dip depth with BLOC approval • Understand ISIS beam loss display • Beamline magnets • Turn on/off and set current values either through Run Control or manually • Note: default beam polarity = positive • Decay Solenoid – manually set current when required (usually when shutting down at the end of a day, when the DS is set to 200 A. DO NOT TURN OFF THE DS WITHOUT INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE MOM) • Detectors – set HV, turn ON/OFF • C&M – webcams, environment, target info, DAQ info, etc..
What else you will be operating: • Alarm Handlers • Identify source of Alarm & call MOM • Clear problem and acknowledge alarm • Note the alarm in the elog • Run Control • Set up – including trigger setting • Stop/start • Online Reconstruction • Set up & operate • Understand plots and use to identify problems with data or success/failure of studies • Check that DataMover has moved data
Alarms • You must pay attention to alarms (even the annoying ones) • The MOM will make a weekly survey of alarms, noting which are enabled, disabled or silenced. • Any new alarm must be referred to the MOM before action (such as silencing or disabling) is taken • All new alarms and actions must be recorded in the shift records
Shift Records Keeping a complete log of all incidents the occur during a shift is critical. 1. Logbooks can be considered, and used, as legal records in the case of incident investigations 2. We must know what is going on so we can reconstruct the data-taking process if necessary There are 2 records which must be kept up-to-date during a shift
Shift Records 1. The paper logbook This provides the basis for any investigation of accidents and near misses. The Shift Leader must record details of all incidents which required the callout of an expert, interventions in the systems, or any other safety related activities. These details include : reason for callout, personnel, times and activities.
Shift Records 2. eLog records (shifter) The eLog is used to record details of the shift. There are two parts : the mice Log and the Shift Summary. Mice Log tab (pertaining to physics analyses) Record any incident or observation in the mice Log page. This includes: all events occurring in shift (including important decisions by MOM/DC, interventions into the Hall observations of anomalous behaviour of controls observations of anomalous behaviour in OnRec or OnMon histograms any other detail pertinent to the running of the shift
Shift Records 2. eLog records (shifter) Shift Summary – one entry summarising the shift, usually kept up to date through the shift. This includes Date and name of shifters ISIS Status Details of data taken : run numbers run goal (e.g. for what measurement ) beam setting tag triggers / spill Target information See previous entries for examples More information is better (ie. Write more not less)
Shift Records 3. CDB (shifter) The Conditions Database (CDB) now contains all relevant run configuration and summary data Before starting a new run verify that the information recorded in the CDB agrees with information on Run Control
At shift handover • A shift handover form should be filled out at the end of shift. • This can be found in the eLog under the “Shift Handover” tab • This takes the place of the “Shift Checklist”
