History of Earth Day within Cornwall • In 2006, Parks Canada started cleaning up the waterfront from St. Lawrence College to the canal (from waters edge to the bike path) as a way of making a contribution to the City we live and work in. • Parks Canada repeated this activity in 2007 and 2008 with increases in participants and increased distance. • Last year the River Institute cleaned the area around the College.
2009 Earth Day clean up • This year, Parks Canada is again planning to lead a clean up activity. • We will meet in the parking lot at the Civic Complex at 12:30 in the afternoon on April 22,2009. We will supply garbage bags, plastic gloves and water to drink.
What other cities are doing on Earth Day • Hundreds of cities around Ontario are actively involved in a variety of Earth Day Activities. • Visit www.earthday.ca and go to events for a full listing of cities and their level of involvement and activity ideas. • Kingston has 2 events while Ottawa has 8 Kitchener 10 and Toronto 17. • Parry Sound has 2 clean up events and Pembroke has 1. • Cornwall is not on this list.
Proposal for consideration • City of Cornwall to take the lead in creating an Earth Day Committee. • Earth Day Committee to propose vision and define possible activities and actions to realize the vision. • Creating the vision and defining possible activities could be done in an engaging fashion and involve Cornwall’s residents.
Benefits for City of Cornwall (& City Council) • City benefits from clean up activities. • Citizens who participate feel better and get some physical activity at the same time. • City can promote itself as a clean and earth friendly city. • City Council is seen as being proactive and creative in their efforts to improve the City’s appearance and promoting a cleaner environment without any additional costs. • Supports the “Cornwall as a clean city” image.
