The Last Years of the British Mandate (1945-48) • Establishment of the Arab League – 1945 • 7 Arab states join • Opposed to Jewish immigration and the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine • Ernest Bevin (GB foreign secretary) • Opposed massive immigration • Felt it would provoke rebellion of Arabs • Wanted to maintain British military bases in eastern Mediterranean (Egypt was demanding their removal)

The Last Years of the British Mandate (1945-48) • US policy • Mixed • Some wanted a better relationship with Arab states – maybe a buffer against Stalin and developing Cold War • Some (like Truman) were sympathetic to Jewish Holocaust survivors • Immigration to US was restricted • Truman pressures GB to admit 100,000 Holocaust survivors, supporting Ben Gurion’s request

The Last Years of the British Mandate (1945-48) • GB denies request • Sends over 50,000 attempted illegal Jewish immigrants to internment camps in Cyprus • This damages GB’s international image • GB resents US pressure on immigration • But sought to work with US on a solution • Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry – 1945 • Recommends: • Immediate admission of 100,000 Holocaust survivors • End to restrictions of Jews buying land in Palestine • But was vague about future of Palestine…favored continuation of mandate until UN could take it over

  5. The Last Years of the British Mandate (1945-48) • Truman immediately supported immigration and land purchases • Morrison-Grady Committee – July 1946 • More US-GB diplomacy suggested: • Autonomous Arab and Jewish provinces in a single state (still under British administration) • Immigration of 100,000 within a year • Truman rejected this plan however under pressure from Zionists
