Most teens are stubborn • Secondly, even with a curfew, teens will do what they want.
They feel… different • Sneaking out gives a teen a thrill, like they are invincible.
Adds stress • Having a curfew will add stress on the teen because they will freak out about running late.
Stress = Freaking out • If your teen drives, which most do nowadays, they might stress out about running late and might not make it home.
Curfews are popular though • But that doesn’t mean they work.
1957 curfews • By the year 1957, half of America’s cities with population of 100,000 or more had curfews that didn’t work.
Crime rates in Detroit • After Detroit adopted the youth curfew in 1976, juvenile crime dropped 6% in curfew hours but raised 13% in non-curfew hours.
San Diego • Their youth curfew has been invalidated twice by appellate courts for violating young people’s rights.
California • Also, an 18-year analysis of 21 cities in California conclude that youth curfews ARE useless.
Raises crime rates during day • It may lower juvenile crime rates at night but it just raises them during the day.
Wasting resources • Curfews don’t help much, just instead, waste police resources.
Curfews don’t teach • A curfew doesn’t teach a teen to be polite, be responsible, or to obey the law.
