Community Service By: Stephanie Walker
Before I moved to college, I did a lot of community service with my church, but I had never done any outside of that. Everyone that I do community service work with are in my classes or in my sorority, and this really helps me to get to know who they are inside of themselves. Why is community service important?
Relay for Life To get ready for Relay for Life, my sorority did a fundraiser in the Palms Quad that raised money to help us get our booth set up. Although, we did not raise as much money as we did the night of the walk, the money helped us get started. We sold cookies and brownies and handed out Relay for Life cups with candy in them. We also handed out Breast Cancer Awareness pamphlets. The radio station Hot 102.7 was also there, and they announced what we were doing and told everyone that we were doing it for Relay for Life and told what days the walk would be. Other sororities and fraternities were out there raising money as well.
Relay for Life My sorority had our own team for Relay for Life. We also had a dunking booth that raised money. Also, people from my high school were out at Relay for Life selling candy and drinks for quarters, which sold well. Although, we had Greek week games the day of Relay for Life and the next morning as well, there was a great turn out.
Zeta had a tent that sold Chick-fil-A sandwiches. When it was 3 in the morning, everyone wanted a chicken sandwiches, so those sold well. The male cross dressing pageant was also a hit that night, and I was sure to support my peers and friends that were in the pageant. Relay for Life
Some other fun activities that I participated in at Relay for Life were dodge ball and a oversized glove boxing match. I completely dominated at the boxing. Dodge ball was really fun because I had never tried to play dodge ball in the dark! Relay for Life
Car Washes We had a lot of car washes with our FYE class. We washed around 20 cars and were out there for 3 or 4 hours. The money went towards the FYE flag football team and other events. Most of the time I just held the signs at all of the car washes that I went to, and danced to random peoples music as they drove by.
Big Man on Campus My sorority had a fundraiser that raised money that went to Breast Cancer Awareness and Education. We raised around $5,000 that went to our philanthropy and we had a great time, as well. Zeta does this fundraiser each year, and everyone cant wait to see who the new “king” is for that year. Big Man on Campus has a lot of fun and crazy stuff that keeps people coming back year after year. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Big Man on Campus I plan on attending Big Man on Campus next year and the years after that as well. Not only does it raise money for a great cause, but it is very funny and many different groups of people go. Zeta has this fundraiser each year, and more people come each year. BMOC BMOC
Breast Cancer Awareness and Education My sororities philanthropy is Breast Cancer Awareness and Education. One of the things that we have done is go to River Street in Jacksonville and hand out pamphlets. This was fun and the people there were very willing to take the pamphlets and talk about our philanthropy as well.
My sorority has done many fundraisers for our philanthropy. We have also had chicken dinners, which were sold at the Greek Week softball tournament. That was the only food that was for sale out there all day long, so we sold a good amount of those. There are many small things that we do to raise money for our philanthropy as well.
I plan on doing more community service for more years to come, because I really enjoy seeing other people be happy. Even when working for no pay is not the most fun thing in the world, sometimes its not the money that matters. Just seeing other people be happy should be enough pay to encourage us and others to do more for our community.
