  2. What is Amoebic Dysentery? • Intestinal illness. • Associated with -bloody stool -stomach pain -fever. • Caused by a amoebic parasite. • Which is a protozoan • Also referred to as Ameobasis

  3. When was it found • Was first found in 1857 • By Fredrick Lösch. • He found it in the stool of a Russian peasant. • The disease was most completely described in a 1980 report call “amoebic dysentery” written by the American researchers, Henri AmedeeLafleur and William Thomas Councilman.

  4. Can I Catch it? • Yes! • Amoebic dysentery is contagious. • Caught from drinking contaminated water, food, or from contact with an infected person. • There have been over 600 cases in the state of New York each year.

  5. How do I know I have it? • There are some symptoms that come in two different levels. • mild symptoms: bloody stool, nausea, abdominal pain, tenderness, and weight loss • Can appear days to months after contracting the illness. • Serious symptom is liver abbess • Months up to a year after the symptoms are no longer there the parasite might be.

  7. Can this be prevented? • You can prevent it by washing you hands. • Staying at home from school or work if sick. • There is an antibiotic that can be prescribed from a doctor called Metronidazole. • To prevent the disease you can take drugs to kill the pathogen and disease causing agents

  8. Labs and doctors • Doctors can prescribe antibiotics to a patient how has amoebic dysentery. • Stool sample analysis. • Blood tests. • Ultrasound. • Colonoscopy.

  9. Definitions • colonoscopy-the use of a thin, lighted instrument inserted into the rectum and the colon is viewed directly then a sample is taken to be tested. • Ultrasound- using the reflections of high frequency sound waves to construct an image of a body organ (used to see babies).
