Amoebic Meningoencephalitis • The most common diseases formed by these Ameba's are Naegleriafowleri, Balamuthia, and Acanthamoeba.
Naegleriafowleri • It is very difficult for a person to get this disease unless contaminated water from this Ameba was to reach the ceiling of their nose. • Then the ameba could reach your brain and eat away at it and cause fatal results.
Naegleriafowleri • If a person was to drink water contaminated by Naegleriafowleri the chances of getting the disease is still very little. • When a person drinks the contaminated water the Ameba would be exposed to stomach acids that would kill it and would not have a chance to infect the host.
Naegleriafowleri • Cases in the U.S. involving this disease are ranging from 3-10 a year. • In august of 2013 a four year old girl form south east New Orleans died from this disease and he parents did not know what to do or how to treat her. It was too late to get her to a hospital. • Autopsy showed doctors what killed her and informed authorities what had happened. The local water supply was infected with this ameba and was able to reach her brain. The water plant killed the disease and was able to make the drinking water usable again.
Naegleriafowleri • The most common way most cases caught this disease was from swimming in freshwater areas such as lakes, rivers, streams, etc. • These are the most common areas this Ameba lives and grows. • Symptoms of catching this disease include red areas growing on the body and getting larger over time along w/ headaches, trouble talking and walking, vision problems, sensitivity to light along with many other symptoms.
Balamuthia mandrillaris • This ameba is found in dust and soil and is more common since its is able to live in these environments. • Before this ameba was discovered it was more common than todays cases even though cases back then were still very few. • When scientists discovered this ameba cases were reduced dramatically. • This happened because scientists found a way to keep people being able to easily contract it by putting more safety precautions around people.
Balamuthia mandrillaris • Symptoms of this ameba was still the same as Fowleri. • The only real difference is Fowleri is water bound and Balamuthia mandrillaris is soil and dust bound. • Both ameba's still do the same damage and are both fatal if a person was to get the disease. It would eat away at the brain and eventually consume enough of it to kill a person.
