Who are HAE? • Founded in 1973 • Independent, not for profit • Over 800 members, 3000 locations • Representing rental companies • Setting standards • Delivering training and other benefits
Our solution to improving standards
A Brief history: • Originally compulsory inspection for members • Replaced because of cost • First scheme developed around 2000 • Aid H & S • Checklist • Little procedural requirements • Minimal documentation • Poor marketing
Why develop a Private Standard? • Member research indicated desire • Need to improve status • Need to improve marketing • Needed buy in from associated stakeholders • Construction related • Event related • Government – Local & National
How did we do it? • Gained commitment from members • Secured development funding • Engaged professional consultant • Created a working group • Engaged with BSI • Engaged with wider group • Launched December 2010
Stakeholders Working Group • British Standards Institution (BSI) • United Kingdom Contractors Group (UKCG) • ConstructionSkills • Contractor Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS) • Health and Safety Executive (HSE) • Events Supplier and Services Association (ESSA) • Hire & Rental companies
How does it work? • Business Management Framework • Organisational management standards • Management processes & systems • Management Functions • Customer service and safe provision
How does it work? • Assessment process • Independent, accredited assessors • Two part assessment • Desk Top • Site (includes equipment inspection) • Validity • 3 year certificate • Annual site compliance check • Full re-assessment every 3 years
Following the launch • Marketing and PR to members’ clients • Agreeing mutual recognition with other bodies • Creating desire in existing members and their clients • Creating web based tools for: • assessment • members to manage their systems
So what do people think? “the SafeHire Private Standard has given us a great quality and health and safety management tool” Claire Gaines, MD of SHC “ the SafeHire Private Standard is unique, it is the only certification scheme that actually inspects our sites whilst auditing our systems and documentation” Neil Macara, Group Quality & Accreditation Manager Speedy Hire plc
